The power of an open work space

In the 40 plus years I have been in the woodworking trade I have had the good fortune to hone my skills on a variety of woodworking projects. Solving the unique problems with each new piece, it occurred to me there were specific skills associated with subsets in the business that would cross over from one to another. The refinishing skills from antique restoration would apply to a wooden car. The jigging and fixture design required in building a wooden car would apply to construction and repairs in lutherie. The common thread is the ability to keep an open mind. to look elsewhere for the "what if". The open workspace affords this "elsewhere" approach and a constant opportunity for new thinking about old problems.
